Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (DNE)

Many nasal problems occur deeper than a routine torch examination can show. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy, often written as DNE, uses a slim rigid or flexible camera to inspect the nasal passages, sinus drainage areas and the back of the nose. The examination can reveal inflammation, polyps, discharge, bleeding points and structural blockage during an outpatient consultation.

DNE is a diagnostic procedure, not an operation. It can sometimes prevent unnecessary scans, repeated medicines or assumptions about the cause of nasal symptoms.

01

Why May a DNE Test Be Recommended?

Nasal endoscopy can be useful for investigating:

  • Persistent nasal blockage
  • Recurrent or chronic sinus symptoms
  • Thick or foul-smelling nasal discharge
  • Reduced or altered sense of smell
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Suspected nasal polyps
  • Postnasal drip, throat clearing or unexplained cough
  • A foreign body, particularly in a child
  • Follow-up after septoplasty or sinus surgery
  • One-sided symptoms that need closer evaluation

A one-sided blocked nose, repeated bleeding, facial swelling or blood-stained discharge should be assessed promptly rather than treated repeatedly without examination.

02

What Can Nasal Endoscopy Show?

The camera allows direct inspection of the septum, inferior and middle turbinates, sinus drainage pathways, nasal lining and nasopharynx. The doctor may identify swelling from allergy, pus suggesting infection, a septal spur, crusting, a polyp, enlarged adenoid tissue or a source of bleeding.

DNE can also guide a targeted swab or biopsy when clinically required. However, it cannot show everything inside the sinuses or surrounding bone. A CT scan may still be needed for surgical planning, suspected complications or disease located beyond the endoscope’s view.

DNE Test: Step by Step

Most examinations take only a few minutes. A rigid endoscope can provide a highly detailed view, while a flexible scope can navigate around curves and may also allow inspection of the throat and voice box. The choice depends on the symptom and patient comfort.

04

Is Nasal Endoscopy Painful?

Patients commonly feel pressure, watering of the eyes, an urge to sneeze or a bitter taste from the spray. Significant pain is not expected, although a severely inflamed or narrow passage can feel uncomfortable. Tell the doctor if you use blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or have undergone recent nasal surgery.

Minor spotting can occasionally occur, particularly when the lining is inflamed. Severe bleeding is unusual. Most patients can return to normal activities immediately, but should wait for throat numbness to wear off before eating or drinking if the anaesthetic spray reaches the throat.

Patients can usually watch the monitor if they wish, and the doctor may save representative images for comparison at future visits. This makes DNE useful not only for the first diagnosis but also for objectively tracking response to treatment.

Some patients need only DNE; others need both. Choosing the test based on symptoms avoids unnecessary investigation.

06

How DNE Helps Treatment Planning

The findings can support treatment for allergy, infection, crusting or nosebleeds. They can also determine whether septoplasty, turbinoplasty, polyp surgery or FESS should be discussed. After sinus surgery, endoscopy is particularly valuable for cleaning, monitoring openings and identifying early scar formation.

FAQ

What is DNE in ENT?

DNE means diagnostic nasal endoscopy, an examination of the nasal passages using a thin camera.

Does nasal endoscopy require hospital admission?

No. Diagnostic endoscopy is usually an outpatient procedure and patients generally leave soon afterwards.

Is fasting required before DNE?

Usually not. If another procedure or sedation is planned, separate fasting instructions may be given.

Is DNE painful?

Most patients feel pressure or mild discomfort rather than pain. A local anaesthetic and decongestant spray may improve comfort.

Can children undergo nasal endoscopy?

Yes. A flexible scope or modified approach may be used depending on age, cooperation and the clinical need.

Can DNE diagnose sinusitis?

It can show pus, swelling or polyps and supports diagnosis, but a CT scan may be required for deeper disease or surgical planning.

Can a biopsy be taken during DNE?

A targeted sample may be taken when indicated, but this is explained separately and may require additional preparation.

Will my nose bleed after endoscopy?

Minor spotting can occur, especially with inflamed lining. Significant bleeding is uncommon.

Is DNE useful after sinus surgery?

Yes. It helps monitor healing, remove crusts and assess whether the sinus openings remain clear.

Where can I get diagnostic nasal endoscopy in Indore?

Dr. Abhishek Malviya performs DNE for appropriate nasal and sinus concerns in Indore.
